Just question ... What petrol is best to use in the cx30... Standard unleaded or super/premium unleaded.. ?
Any benefit from the super unleaded, offsetting the extra cost?
We'll be looking to give the car it's first fill up this week..

We just put regular 95 in but only from Esso (Nectar points), BP or Shell. I never, ever use supermarket fuel. Don't let anyone tell you petrol is the same because it's not - it all might come on the same tanker but it's the refining that makes the differences. Every now and again, when my tank is almost empty I fill up with Shell 99 for a treat especially if I've got a long journey to do.

I used to use nothing but Shell 99 in my modded Jap cars because I thought they did feel more sprightly.

Steve, with your car being brand new you'll not benefit from any engine cleaning properties from using 98 or 99 so I'd stick with regular 95 from Shell, BP or Esso.

I swear by Shell.

Partly due to the marketing i've been fed as an enthusiast and actual information of what goes into their fuels. Also many serious car guys I know swear by it too.

From my experience, the regular grade is fine. This is not a bad question though, because in the CX-5 turbo, it does make a difference, even though the car can take either grade of petrol. In that car you get better performance out of the higher octane fuel.

The answer to the majority of fuel questions is a combination of the recommended octane rating for your car ( different engines require different octane levels) and Top Tier fuel. TOP TIER™ Gasoline Brands (toptiergas.com)

To qualify to be recognized as Top Tier the additive package has to meet or exceed some very specific requirements. Most of the major brands have at least some fuels that have sufficient additives and qualify for those grades of fuels. Some marketers might only have Top Tier additives in their highest octane blends so you really have to do your homework. For owners who do not regularly use Top Tier fuels, a fuel injection cleaner additive is advisable and with some manufacturers required for their GDI engines at each oil change interval.

In a prior lifetime, around 1997, one of my insurance clients was an engineer for Texaco. He talked about this and said, at that time, Texaco and Chevron used the same amount of additives in all 3 grades of gasoline, the larger amount used in premium fuel. He said it cost about 1/2 cent per grade to increase the additives so their cost was 1/2 cent higher on mid-grade and a penny higher on regular than other brands that didn't use the full additive package across the board. I had a car that ran a little rough. 5 tanks of Texaco premium then Texaco regular after that and it ran excellently.
