Keys?

Not the fob thingie, the actual mechanical key inside the fob. Has everyone made sure their key works? I wish I had.

It all started with the crashing of the sound system and I'd been sitting in the car trying the various reboot codes suggested or implied and finally gave up, switched off and went to bed. The next morning I went to start the car and no dice. Dash message told me to put my foot on the brake when it already was. Another said push button start not working. (Duh)

So I figured I'd just start it with the mechanical key except there's no place to put it to start it. Why would Mazda give you a key that you can't use to start the car? So I gave up, checked the remote worked and decided to call the dealer.

When he calls me back I walk out to the car and the touch entry doesn't work. So I try the fob unlock and it doesn't work. Well, thankfully, I do have the mechanical key . . . . except . . . wait for it . . . it won't work either.

I'll skip the part of the two tow trucks it took to find the right one to pick it up because the parking brake is automatic. And the service manager who came out, not believing the key wouldn't work, finding the same thing I and the first tow truck guy found.

At this hour, Mazda is sending another set of keys so I'm waiting to hear if we can even get in the car. I was lucky this happened in my own driveway and is covered. I would suggest you might want to check your own keys before getting stranded somewhere and I'd be curious if any of you have the same experience I've had.

it's not unique to Mazda, it's the same thing with my Kia Soul, the physical key is to only enter the vehicle if your smart key fob does not work (battery gone dead for example). To start the vehicle you hold the fob against the start push button, same applies to the CX-30 as described on page 4-7 in the owners manual.
Your dealer failed to explain the procedure to you at delivery.
I use the key to lock car when I go surfing , the fob remains in the car and the metal key is tied to string in a zip pocket in my board shorts, even if someone were to break into car it can’t be started until the key used to manually lock it unlocks the door , my dealer demonstrated this to me. Sorry to hear about your problems, hopefully you get it sorted.

you can't expect the dealer to explain every single feature of the vehicle, owners have to take some responsibility and take the time to read the owners manual to get the full value of such an expensive item.

I like this idea, but I thought the security features prevented the car from being locked with the fob inside?

I did try that and it didn't work. I think the battery was so dead by then that it couldn't work. The only thing I can think of is that somehow I pushed the button to turn off the motor but it went to auxiliary mode and the fan drained the battery overnight. If I learn more, I'm happy to share.

Mazda did send another set of keys but the mechanicals were blanks and needed to be cut to a code Mazda supplied. Maybe the dealers are supposed to do this but whoever was supposed to cut the keys to the car, didn't.

They have gotten the battery charged and remotes are working. They are tackling the audio issues now. Hopefully it just involves an update.

Normally you can’t , like if you pushed boot lock button with fob inside it wouldn’t function or touching door lock with fob inside but the metal key will manually lock car with fob inside.
