The CX-30 is capable of 53.3 mpgs according to early reports of the 2.0-liter gasoline engine version.

According to Mazda what we can expect is "diesel-like fuel economy" thanks to their use of innovative technology found in the two engine options available at launch: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic transmission, or a 2.0-liter four with either an automatic or a six-speed manual! Those engine options were confirmed in a CARB (California Air Resources Board) document that you can find attached below.

Also quoted from Mazda are these important expectations of both engines:
  • "The latest Skyactiv-G 2.0 gasoline engine delivers enhanced driving performance, fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness. It adopts a cylinder deactivation system that shuts down cylinders 1 and 4 in light-load situations such as constant-speed cruising. This contributes to greatly reduced pumping loss and lowered mechanical resistance."
  • "The new Skyactiv-X engine features Mazda’s innovative Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI) combustion to bring compression ignition to a gasoline engine. As a result, it features both the superior initial response and powerful torque of diesel engines, as well as the linear response to even sudden driver inputs and the smooth revving up to the higher rpms typical of a gasoline engine."
  • "The Skyactiv-G 2.0 and Skyactiv-X engines are equipped with Mazda’s M Hybrid system for both greater gains in fuel economy, and higher levels of driving pleasure and real-world environmental friendliness."
And if you're concerned about how optioning for i-ACTIV AWD might impact your range, it wont:
  • "Thanks to a newly developed control system and new technologies to reduce friction, i-Activ AWD delivers a refined and stable ride in any situation and real-world fuel economy almost as good as a front-wheel drive vehicle."
Where the CX-30's mpg rating starts to drop off will be with the manual transmission, as is the case with most vehicles these days.

Once real-world fuel consumption numbers are available, what should we expect?

Is that combined fuel economy? because if so that's a staggering claim by Mazda.
official CX-30 fuel economy numbers are in and its much more realistic but still VERY good for a ICE setup

Fuel Economy - EPA-estimated MPG (city/highway)
SKYACTIV-G 2.5L
  • FWD: 25/33 mpg
  • AWD: 24/31 mpg
SKYACTIV-G 2.5L with CDA:
  • FWD: 25/33 mpg
  • AWD: 25/32 mpg
Still, i'm interested in seeing what real world mpg numbers are like. EPA MPG rating is reliable but nothing beats actual testing under conditions we'll be throwing it at on a daily basis.

Also to note is the fuel tank capacity.

Fuel Tank Capacity
  • FWD: 13.5 U.S. gallons
  • RWD: 12.7 U.S. gallons

Agreed, a very solid fuel economy rating! Now all that's left is to see what averages people are getting when it comes out.
First highway trip today with my CX with Skyactive G. Running at 72~74 it leveled out at 36.5 across I-80 in Ohio.
I've not done many long journeys, but I am noticing a good economy with my SkyActiv X (2L). I have an overall average MPG of 39.5 mpg UK of mostly short journeys (under 20 miles). (This is about 33mpg on US gallons). We're about to undertake a road trip to see relatives as UK lockdown restrictions are lifted, so it will be interesting to see how the MPG varies on longer journeys.
has anyone drive the skyactiv x vs skyactiv g 2.5L? and which ones is better?
Im curious.
My statistic for highway (99%) (2021 CX-30 AWD, Select) SKYACTIV-G 2.5L.
36.5 mpg ( speed 70...74 mph / 90% cruise control (disabled safety assistance), tire 39psi.
In the car only driver with ~30kg load / highway goes mostly flat.
Watching the instantaneous mileage one can quickly see that accelerations kill the fuel economy. Steady driving with slight variations in speed on the hilly terrain where I live have resulted in 32 mpg on average. About the same as the 2013 Buick Encore 1.4L turbo that this car replaced.
Just an fyi. I have 2k miles on my vehicle and the dash avg is 33.2, 60-40% hwy city/suburban In my hand caluclations i am getting over 30mpg every tank, or partial tank (min 1/2 tank) , the other day i took a trip in the mountains so lots of up n down hills, no faster than 60mph usually. On this tank of 90% hwy and 10% city i got 35,7 mph hand calculated So....overall, so far i am very pleased with mileage, i do ot beat on it and use the a/c about 50% of the time.

To make sense from your report you should specify what specific trim you are talking about:
2.5L 186hp AWD,
2.5L 186hp FWD,
2.5L turbo ...
2.0L ... (some non USA trims)

I think you need to fill out your drive info and location before asking others to do it 😁

Where I asked to fill out the drive info? I suggested to accompany MPG statistic with the specific cx-30 trim information, it would be more convenient then to dig through the profile of fellow...

If you fill in your info there's no digging. It tells it below your avatar. It's sort of the polite etiquette thing to do.

click on your avatar at the upper right corner and select Account Settings from the drop-down list, from there you can fill out your "Location" plus all your "Vehicle Details". This info with regards your location will show up if you hover over your avatar on the left side of each post and the vehicle info shows up below your avatar on the left side.

Yup, my make, model, trim, and drivetrain are all listed under my car's pic in my profile so not sure why op could not see that. Hmmmm?
Our AWD now has 10761kms on the clock and has averaged 7.5L/100kms and our FWD has 2690kms and averaged 6.8L/100kms. Mostly highway driving with similar loads and speeds. Fuel consumption based on in car computer.
Last trip in the FWD, from Prescott,ON to Whitby,ON, about 290kms on HWY 401, the car averaged 5.8L/100kms and speed 112km/h, or about 39.9 mpg(US) and speed of 70mph.
