Skyactiv X 2021 update

Greetings from Greece.
While waiting for my CX-30 Skyactiv X to arrive, possibly until the end of January, I found some articles claiming that Mazda is bringing a new ecu software update for the Skyactiv X engine, which increases horsepower to 190PS and torque to 24Nm. I' ve contacted my Mazda dealer to check with him if my car has the updated software and he told me that all MY2021 Skyactiv X models come with 186PS and 23,6Nm, I suppose that's the same thing (updated software) with slightly lower specs maybe due to emission regulations.
Do you have similar information from your dealership ?

I think that there might be two different paths:

Spirit 1.1 update that some websites speak about. It means "hardware vers 1, software version 1" which might be a software update of the existing 2019-2020 180hp engines. However the websites I've seen that give some details about this speak about the engine with 15 compression ratio, which is the "Japanese" version. Couldn't find any reference to a potential update of the "european" engine with 16.3 compression ratio.

2021 engine, 186hp and 240nm has has also hardware modifications. I'm almost sure that this is a different parallel path. This might be the "spirit 2.0" version.

There could be similarities between the software of the (hypothetical) spirit 1.1 and spirit 2.0, and some improvements that can be done for the existing version will be integrated directly into the new one. But based on what the dealers say 2021 engine comes also with different hardware (different compressor, electrical engine etc), meaning that the software update of the 2020 engine will not convert it into the 2021 version.

My understanding is that this hypothetical spirit 1.1 update is not only concerning the engine management but also the AT, the adaptative cruise control, the mild hybrid, etc. I personally think that adaptative cruise control can and should be improved, so I would be glad to get this spirit 1.1 update with or without any power increase...

I have received official confirmation from Mazda UK today relating to this update. We early buyers are not to see any upgrade in engine performance, so once again it pays not to purchase a brand new model first build.
Here is their reply to my question:

Thank you for contacting Mazda UK.
I have shared your question with the Mazda Brand Specialists for advice and they have advised that we are aware of revisions to the Skyactiv-X engine which will be available in the 2021 Mazda CX-30. We have recently communicated the information to the Mazda UK dealer network on the details and availability of this newly revised model which will be available early 2021. We can confirm that there is no power/torque upgrade available to existing vehicles as this is not possible due to a number of firmware and mechanical updates.
Existing Mazda CX-30’s have been type approved at their current power/torque level, and any change to the engine output also has a bearing on the vehicle emissions. Upgrading the power levels of a vehicle post type approval could invalidate the mandatory certification relating to the vehicle and cause further compliance issues later in the vehicle’s life.
I hope this helps in answering your question and if there is anything else I can do to help, please feel free to reply to this email or call us on 03457 48 48 48.
Yours sincerely

Oh dear.. not what you wanted to hear...

It gets me that you read manufacturers spend millions and years developing a car, yet just months after launch they are doing updates..it wouldn't be so bad if it was offered fix to the new cars already on the road.... The buyers who put there trust in the cars development..

Thank you for the email correspondence and I hope the new Mazda CX-30 is being enjoyed.

I have spoken to our Brand Team who work closely with the teams over at Mazda Corporation in Japan for assistance in answering this question as it was not a specification I was aware of.

I can confirm Mazda Dealerships throughout Europe are offering this additional specification and it is not something Mazda dealerships in the UK will look to offer. This will mean throughout certain parts of Europe, a 122, 150 and 181ps versions will be available. All decisions are made based on market research and there has been no demand for a powertrain between the 122ps Skyactiv-G and the 181ps Skyactiv-X models. At this stage there are no plans to change the model line-up.

I hope this helps in answering the question and if there is anything else I can do to help in the future, please feel free to reply to this email or call me on 03457 484848.

Yours Sincerely

However I still went for one because I felt the extra oomph with the auto box and I feel to get the most from iStop / Radar Cruise etc an Auto box is the way to go.
That's the reason I went for the Skyactiv X Tech Automatic version (y) :)

I bought my wife an auto CX-30 G engine. It's her first auto, which she loves. I felt she didn't need the X although you do get an electric sunroof thrown in and the option of stone leather, the latter of which would have been nice. I test drove the G auto and the X manual and felt that there wasn't much more torque in the X so rather than buying her an X engined GT Sport I bought her a G engined GT Sport Tech. I definitely know she appreciates the extra stuff in the Tech.

I test drove the G auto and feel the X suits the auto box much more. Whilst I’m not sure the X is worth the premium on manuals I think it is for the auto. The general gearing for economy and lack of low down torque mean you need to shift down a lot with a manual to make progress and that isn’t translated to the gearing on the auto box which seems happier with the engine characteristics and sport mode really is sporty!

Reviewers quite rightly rave about Mazda manuals ( we had an MX5) but seem to use that to dis the auto. I don’t think the auto is stand out like the manual but neither is it poor. Sort of equal (but different) to the Santa Fe we had and much better than Toyota and Subaru CVT efforts we’ve drove.

Just re read my post.....

We are really pleased with our choice of car. My gripe was that I had read the remapped engine was being offered shortly after the cx30 was released and before ordered cars has been handed over...
I actually got to drive our cx30 for the first time in 3 weeks last weekend...
Can't fault it...well the only fault bis I don't get behind the wheel enough..?

We are extremely pleased but are discovering the odd quirk eg the car doesn’t seem to auto lock when you walk away from it if you got out and went in the boot first. Or maybe it’s us....!
I think one of the features I’m most impressed with are the adaptive headlights. First car we’ve had with these but I’ve read a lot about various models not dipping etc. The Mazda igets it 99% right and wow - they are bright!

Click to expand...Press the lock button on the boot.. the car locks and boot closes..also the driver's door has to be closed last to auto lock/ walkaway.. that's what we have found..
Adaptive headlight's are next level ..

The Skyactiv-X is an amazing achievement. However, a great deal more is possible. Electrohydraulic valve actuation can turn the engine into a high ratio compressor when decelerating. The high pressure air can boost torque at low RPM, where it is mostly needed addressing owner complaints whilst negating the need for a small supercharger. In addition, it will turn the car into an air mild hybrid without the weight and cost of an ehybrid. Having achieved this much so far Mazda, electrohydraulic actuation is not an obstacle to deter you. It is the continuation of the ICE development you believe in and have invested for.
