I'm new to the Mazda family with the recent CX 30 purchase, but rather surprised at the hesitation, lurching and jerking of the transmission, at slower speeds, especially on first startup. Is this normal in a Mazda trans? I've driven Toys, Hondas with both types of trans, and never experienced this issue. I only have about 1500 miles so far, but this trans issue is staining what otherwise is a fine car. Anyone else have this issue? Thx

I've felt it on the cx30 and also had it on my mazda3. I've noticed it on other cars as well but it sounds like it may be common for Mazda. I can mostly avoid it by stepping very lightly on the gas when accelerating from a stop. After a while it becomes second nature but occasionally when I'm in a hurry and stomp on the gas I'll feel the hesitation and lurch.

It does appear to be a normal characteristic of this transmission. It's a very smooth shifting AT, but it does have some glitches. I don't know if it's related to the AWD system or not. As carbonized mentioned, going lightly helps. I've also found going harder does as well. There is a bit of a lurching when the AT goes from 4th to 5th I believe. It's a minor issue to me.

I've commented on this previously. The transmission is very herky jerky at low speeds. And I've also suggested it might be related to the AWD. I'd be curious to see how the FWD version drives. I've more or less accepted it at this point.

This AT can be the smoothest at times. If it wasn't for the acceleration jerkiness, I'd say it's a fantastic trans. It has always received great reviews. If you accelerate very slowly, say 1,800-2,000 rpms, it's smooth. It's also smooth if you get on it more. It's the in-between where this seems to occur.

Yes, I have this same issue when starting up the car and leaving my parking lot. It feels like the car is “waking up” or as if the breaks are wet (and they’re not) ... there’s a little bit of lurching. Slight shudder even. When I get going though it’s gone.

Most of the reviews though of the AT are positive. A recent one from CNET: "Motivating all CX-30s is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated I4 making 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, connected to a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission."

Yes and I called them today and told them if it keeps up I am bringing it in. I have had it 5 days and hoping it is just a new car adjustment because frankly it should not happen on any car let alone new one. I hope they address the issue and if it is computer find the solution. It is taking away from the otherwise beauty of this car.

What was the verdict from your dealer? Is it fixable, or just a glitch with the CX 30? Thanks

If you drive very conservatively from a dead stop, you can avoid a lot of the issues I have found. Once you're out of 1st gear, I don't have any complaints with the AT.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mazda released a reprogramming for it at some point.

"Mounted in front and driving the front wheels — as tested — through a slick shifting 6-speed automatic gearbox, the CX-30 develops 153BHP at 6,000rpm and 147lb/ft torque at 4,000rpm. Delivered with exacting throttle control and seamlessly smooth and linear accumulation, "

Just yesterday I was driving mine and I started to go up a bit of a incline on the road and someone else came behind me so I lightly and slowly pressed into the accelerator to maintain speed when suddenly a very hard jerk /shift shock into a down shift which was very strange how harsh it was and I checked to see what gear it down shifted so harshly into and it went from 6 th to 3rd.
I'm wondering why it did that so roughly as every so often I can feel a noticeable shift shock between 4th and 5th but normally it is almost as smooth as a CVT and in wondering if anybody else with their cx-30 has experienced such.

Yes I notice a lot on a hill near my home it is so frustrating only 500 miles it goes into th3cshop Tuesday. I did not notice it on test ride because on flat roadways and onto a highway . I am hoping this is a computer fix or I am getting rid of it.

I notice a very light shift shock (for lack of a better word) between 4th to 5th. All other gear changes are smooth. I think a lot of this can be alleviated via software if Mazda decides to make it a priority.
