Bad fuel economy from a new turbo

Hi forum,, this is my first post. My dad has a 2021 turbo with 8k miles on it. I realize the fuel economy of the turbo isn't stellar but we're really getting crappy mileage. The trip computer says 22mpg in mixed driving, and the miles to empty indicator is only 230 on a full tank. I went on a short road trip last weekend and I achieved 25mpg doing steady state 65-70mph on the highway for about 3 hours with AC on, 87 octane. I feel like we should be getting at least 3mpg higher, if not more.

I've checked all the basics. Tire pressure is good, no warning lights, engine feels very strong.

Is anyone else getting numbers like these? Anything else I should check?

My average fuel economy is 26.2MPG and best is 35.9MPG. I've been tracking my actual mileage for the last 2 years, but "average" for me is horrible Toronto traffic. And the reason the range is so low is that the tank is 48L (about 10.5G). I've tested with different octane values as well, it doesn't affect fuel economy, only if it runs in the higher or lower state of tune.

EPA rates the CX-30 turbo at:
22 City / 30 Highway / 25 combined

Short answer: Turbo gets terrible fuel economy. For best MPG, the NA is far better.

It's a tradeoff; you either want a fast CX, or a high MPG one. Can't have both.

Best I ever got on a road trip was 26 MPG during 65-70mph cruise in my Turbo. Which isn't great.
Terrible fuel economy?
I suppose it depends on realistic expectations and driving styles.
For an AWD 2.5 litre turbo engine with a SIX speed automatic, the MPG/litres per 100kms is very normal in an equally comparable vehicle. IMO.✌

I'm getting better fuel economy in the 2021 CX-30 Turbo (26.2MPG) that I did with my 2010 Mazda 3 2.0L NA (25.1MPG) so I've been happy with it. It's getting better than that rated numbers so I can't really complain. I'm probably not the most agressive driver because I don't really see a point of weaving through bumper to bumper traffic just to end up basically in the same place and where I live that's what the traffic looks like most of the time.

KSEGG, I'm surprised your highway economy is so much worse than mine. I did a road trip earlier this year and did 32-35 @ 75MPH the majority of the way, through the mountains (VA, WV).

My city MPG is around 18mpg...I've got a lead foot, and I drive in Sport Mode.

My highway MPG is always around 36mpg, and I cruise control at 70-75mph (so no Sport Mode). I did average around 34mpg on a road trip, but I was driving 75-80mph down in Texas.

Oddly enough if I'm not in Sport Mode in the city, my MPG goes down to 16mpg.

I use 89 Octane gas. Tires are Michelin CrossClimates, and I run them at 38 front / 36 rear.

I've had my Turbo for almost 2 years.
22mpg is my average. Probably 80/20 city/highway.
On pure highway, long distance cruising (not stop & go heavy traffic) I can get 26-27mpg if I'm gentle (75mph, steady pace).

Thanks for the replies everyone. I just got back from another highway trip where I achieved only 25.6mpg at 70mph cruise control, flat terrain, AC on. This was a longer trip so I'm more confident in the results, and I'm pretty disappointed. This car should be getting 31-32 under these conditions and we never would have bought it if we knew we'd have to be stopping for gas every 200-250 miles like a v8 sports car.

I still do suspect that something is wrong with the car because my mom's cx5 turbo gets 28mpg all day long and if anything it's a slightly bigger and heavier car that should be getting worse mpg not better. But I don't think these numbers are low enough for the dealer to actually do anything other than give me the standard speech about driving conditions etc.

@OldFart can you point me in the direction of the valve seal issue if you have a spare moment?

My milage didn't improve until about 15k miles on it honestly. getting 25-27 now in mixed

Just last year I was driving a vehicle that had a 225-250 highway range (a moving truck) and I very nearly ran out of gas when one station was closed and the next one was 30-something miles away. I was at 3/8 tank when I started looking.

My dad's cx30, the subject of this thread, is fortunately not as bad as the moving truck. The useful range is about 250 miles, not the total range. Total range 25.6 * 12.7 = 325 miles to empty.

Our 2022 NA 30 has averaged 29.2 mpg, all miles since new, mostly trip miles, cruising at 72 mph on the interstates. Figuring 12 gal capacity in tank, that's 350 range at 29.2 mpg. The most I have seen is 364 miles before the low fuel indicator came on driving alone, lightly loaded, one stop, turn around and return, in dash info indicated 33.2 mpg.

I get 28 mpg mixed highway/city and some of the highway is stop and go. probably 60/40 highway city and I get 28 mpg consistently- checked by actual mileage and actual gallons put in tank- not from the computer . In all city driving never get less than 26 mpg. on highway only easily 30 to 31 mpg going 65 to 80 mph. doesn't seem to matter if I used 92 or 87 octane. 2021 cx30 turbo. this mileage is almost exactly the same as my 2014 GTI with a 6 speed DSG. I'm happy with this kind of mileage in a heavier, AWD platform and a 6 speed auto. just my 2 cents

I have a 23 Premium turbo and I get terrible mileage. I admit I’m not my grandmother but I’m also not a teen who just got their license, lol. I drive more highway and I get like 22mpg! Btwn 19-20 local. I made an effort to drive granny like and it didn’t improve much. When it was new it registered 260 to tank. Now it is at 240 usually. I drove a Mazda three for years, I will admit it wasn’t the best with gas either but when I folded up, I would get btwn 300-330 each tank. I dunno if there’s something wrong with my car or not. Reading these posts I question? Seems common. Between my payment and gas I’m considering getting another car but I love the Mazda lineup so I’m not sure exactly what to do.

As your turbo engine breaks in, it should be averaging 24-26 mpg & a bit higher on pure highway driving at reasonable speeds. My non-turbo has averaged 31-32 mpg over the first two years, with pretty much no highway miles driven - just suburban around-town driving w/mixture of A/C on & off & sports-mode on & off. The non-turbo engine in the CX-30 is plenty robust/quick enough for this size/class vehicle IMO (w/some extra fun in sports mode), so a turbo is just for added giggles really at the expense of practical fuel economy (& likely more headaches down the road as the vehicle ages).

How fast do you drive on the highway. I’ve noticed mpg is very much speed variable. On my last trek between CT and MI, when cruising about 65 (traffic) I could get in the 34mpg range. At about 70, it was in the 31mpg range. Once you get in the 80+mph range (northern MI highway speed limit is 75), the mpg really dropped.
