These cars have a vehicle status monitor which will turn on a wrench indicator on the dash when the car thinks it is time for an oil change - which may be up to 10 000 miles (16 000km) / 12 months. But the service interval can also be set manually to certain distance and/or date. Depending on your country and driving conditions, 5000miles/6 months may be the recommended service interval.

When I picked my car up from the dealer, the service interval had been set manually to 8k/6mo.

I had a similar problem with my car. It seems they all come out of the factory with pre-set 3000 miles and as part of PDI the technicians re-set it to correct one for the country. In the UK it is 12000 miles or 12 months. They just forgot to re-set it on my car during PDI. After a quick call to the dealer, I simply re-set it myself, but I had just delivery miles when I noticed it. It was the first thing I checked when I got the car home. I suggest you talk to the dealer, as with 3300 miles on the clock they might want you to bring the car and re-set it in the dealership.

 

I've had this just happen to my car. Will need to phone the dealer and get it booked in to get the interval set correctly for the UK. The service soon warning started showing after the car passed 2,500 miles so I guess the technicians dropped the ball on this one. Car only 8 months old.

 

Picked my car up at the end of June, but the build date was January so the oil was already more than 5 months old. Age is the likely factor for early seeming 1st service reminders.

 

My dealer was very clear about every 6k miles for oil changes, even on the na engine. I find that odd as most makers now do one year or 10k whichever is first. 6k no matter the time, seems excessive to me. Thoughts?

 

Most dealers sells cars, not care. I change my oil and filter every 6 months or 5K mils, which ever comes first, with a premium synthetic oil and filter.

 

My car came with the computer set for 8k miles. My car includes the first 4 years of service. I will be at 10 weeks tomorrow and 600 miles. I got a phone call from the dealer a week ago to set up my first service next month at 3 months. I said I thought the free services were every 6 months. He said no but when I told him how low my mileage is he said ok, let's do 6 months. I'll do every 6 months the first 4 years and then when I have to pay for them I'll go to 12 months which will be 4k-5k miles between services.

 

My service is free for two years, sticking to mazda's schedule.

 

just follow what it tells you in your owners manual, and as mentioned if it comes on too early then you can set it to a time period (it happened to me and that's what I did).

 

I was told the first free service was at 1000km (I pay only for oil and other materials) by the Sales manager at Mazda Hang Dong. I queried that with him but then spoke to a girl on his staff who has worked for Mazda Hong Kong. She said 8000km.

I haven't gone wrong with oil changes every 5000 miles. For me, it's really easy to keep track when service is due. That being said, with me driving less due to the pandemic, I've been getting service every 6 months, independent of mileage.

 

Manual says every 10k miles unless severe weather or short (under 5 miles) driving. Buffalo the dealership told me is considered severe weather so they recommend every 5k, I have been doing it every 5k just in case anything happens and they try to go around warranty on an oil change technicality.

Service intervals are for mileage OR time.... so if you're at 6 months, it's time for the first (5k mile) service.

Hi, yup Buffalo NY. I have been going to the Northtown one. Friendly staff, responsive to questions and have had a pleasant experience so far. I look for the service manager Shawn when I go. Have not gone to the Towne one, the north town is a little closer to where I live.

 

I just had this discussion with my dealer svc dept the other day when i brought the car in for its 6k check up n oil change. As my vehicle sits in a heated garage january to may and as it is a second vehicle and so i put only about 5k miles a year on it, i was told a once a year oil change is fine. while under warranty i will continue with twice a year ...for now.

 

Different car makes and models will have different servicing requirements and it’s a good idea to check the manual or the manufacturer’s online advice.
Makers often recommend services at fixed mileages or every year, whichever comes first. It’s done this way for a reason, because even if you haven’t driven anywhere near the mileage quoted, your vehicle’s components can still degrade and lose efficiency through age alone.
Not only that, a lower-than-average mileage often indicates a lot of short journeys, and these cause disproportionate wear and tear which makes an annual service all the more important.

 

You've got that right! Manufactures often state intervals that are not conducive to longevity, because, of course... they sell cars!

 

I have a Turbo Premium Plus and had my first 2 changes at 5k intervals, and noticed my 3rd one is spaced at 3k miles, which is inching up. The dealer told me Turbos are recommended every 3k miles instead of 5k. So weird. People on Reddit have told me to ignore this, as the dealer is trying to get me in their door more often, and to stick to the car manual’s suggested 5k intervals. Any thoughts?

I had a Gold Maintenance package of only 2 free oil changes, and both are used up now.

 

Could be a dealer tactic in an attempt to not have your add oil light come on, and then having to do the needed repair if your turbo has the bad exhaust valve seals. See this thread. Oil Burning

5K mile intervals is plenty conservative.
